Our heritage

A weave with a story in every thread

Light enough for a summer afternoon and graceful enough for a celebration, the Maheshwari saree is known for its gentle sheen, its airy drape and its finely woven borders.

  1. From the banks of the Narmada

Maheshwari weaving takes its name from Maheshwar, a temple town on the Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh, where the craft has been practised for generations.

  2. Shaped by a royal patron

The tradition is closely linked with Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, the eighteenth century ruler of Malwa, who is remembered for encouraging weavers to settle in Maheshwar.

  3. Motifs drawn from stone

Classic patterns such as the chatai, a woven mat, the eent, a brick, and the heera, a diamond, echo the architecture of the Maheshwar fort along the river.

The details

What makes a Maheshwari saree

A few things worth knowing before you choose, and after you bring one home.

  • Close up of a maroon saree border woven with gold diamond motifs

    Read the border

Maheshwari borders are traditionally woven so that both faces look finished, which lets the saree be draped either way. Look for crisp, even motifs along the edge.

  • A woman in a dusty rose saree standing in soft window light

    Feel the drape

The classic silk and cotton blend gives the fabric its light weight and soft sheen, so it falls cleanly and stays comfortable through a long day.

  • Neatly folded sarees in maroon, ivory, rose and gold tones

    Care for it well

Fold your saree loosely, store it wrapped in soft cotton away from direct sun, and refold it along new lines now and then to protect the zari.
